Pioneer Coconut Festival in Africa

African Coconut Heritage Initiative is Inspired by the spirit of cultural and natural heritage preservation and in consciousness of the current imperatives for economic diversifications, the Coconut Heritage Festival tagged Agunkefest, since 2009, annually celebrate COCONUT to generate an increasing awareness for Government and the people of Lagos State on the array of invaluable Economic, Health, and Environmental benefits that Coconut offers amidst cultural manifestations, pomp, and pageantries with more concentration in the Badagry corridor as a pilot program.

Promote Tourism

Badagry as a Black history melting point in Nigeria, having the largest Slavery monuments and the number one destination for tourist from all over the world, plays host to our yearly coconut festival. Home to the largest coconut plantation in Nigeria and one of the biggest in Africa today.

Promote Entertainment

African Coconut Heritage Initiative recognizes the importance of entertainment in an event of this magnitude and has careully planned all events bearing in mind the well being of the participants by putting together class acts in Music, Drama, Comedy etc.

AgunkeFest 2019

Coconut Festival celebrations are synonymous to countries and cities in the world where there is notable coconut production capacity. In this last few decades, the festivals had been staged in places such as Sao Pablo Coconut festivals in the Philippines, Haitian Coconut festivals in China, Hawaii & Cape Kora Coconut festival in the USA, Point Pelican Coconut festival in Caribbean Islands and also in Canada. The festival is commonly used to harness the Economic, cultural and social benefits of this wonder crop

THE COCONUT HERITAGE FESTIVAL (CHF) AGUNKEFEST 2019

In view of the forgoing, the festival is designed as a multi-faceted event slated to hold at September with series of events to harness the Socio-Economic, Environmental and Health benefits of Coconut across the State with a climax in the historical town of Badagry.

Activities lined for the 2019 edition are:

Expos and Exhibitions:

This program is designed to be a Coconut Economic and Business Forum for various stakeholders in the sector and to woo Investors to the Lagos State. Featuring exhibitions products and services centered on the Coconut value chain and Symposium.

Coconut Planting Exercise:

This program is a practical demonstration and awareness towards increasing the production capacity and discouraging indiscriminate falling of Coconut trees in Lagos State and to protect the Coconut Heritage.

Art & Craft Competition;

This program seek to take the message of Contemporary art and craft to the future generations. It is designed as a competition amongst primary and secondary schools Art students across the State.

 

Cooking Demonstrations/Competitions;

This is a competition among upcoming Chefs and showcase the health benefit of using virgin coconut oil for cooking.

Miss Coconut Carnival & Fashion Show;

It’s beauty competition mainly to show case Coconut fashion and African beauty.

Coconut Farmers Competition;

This is the exhibition of the “THE BIGGEST COCONUT” Competition among the farmers. This is to encourage Farmers create embrace to new technology in Coconut production.

Walkathon

To Topo-Island the Source of Coconut Plantation in Nigerian. It’s a walk for fitness program.

Beach Soccer Competition,

A football competition played on the sandy beach of Badagry, where Nigeria's famous Beach Soccer Team trains for major world Championships

Unity Carnivals and Cultural Performance among Coconut producing communities;

featuring cultural performances, Games, Music, comedy etc.

Heritage Ambassadors Awards;

This award goes to notable individuals and organisations who had contributed to the development of the industry especially the Coconut value chain.

OBJECTIVES OF THE FESTIVAL

i. To open a window for the investors and financiers towards increasing production and commercialization of the coconut subsector in the State.

ii. To bring the Coconut Industry in Lagos State to the global Stage.

iii. To enhance interaction and knowledge sharing among investors, Coconut value chain actors and the Governments at all levels.

iv. To serve as a platform for the Coconut Stakeholders to showcase their products and Services.

v. To enlighten the citizens of the array of Environmental, Health other benefits and potentials of the Wonder crop.

vi. To preserve the Coconut Heritage of Lagos State.
